Children’s of Alabama commissioned ArchitectureWorks to convert the former Emergency Department of Children’s Hospital into two outpatient clinics. The project consisted of 29 exam rooms, an Urodynamics Diagnostic Room / Treatment Area and associated Waiting, Triage & Staff Work Areas. The project also involved adding an Audiology Suite with two isolated sound booths and the relocation of the existing Lactation Department / Consultation Rooms. Our charge was to complete this project as economically as possible utilizing as much of the existing partition layout and utilities as possible. We used our expertise to selectively demolish partitions to create connections and rearrange the space to function as two separate clinics. The work had to be phased to allow for the Lactation Department to be relocated and remain in operation during the entire construction period.
